Fine overall, but dated rooms were disappointing for a Four Seasons

Matthew G on Apr 28, 2024

I recently stayed at the Four Seasons Chicago for one night when I was in the city for business, and I was a bit disappointed by this hotel. In a city saturated with luxury hotel options, I specifically chose the Four Seasons because I’m loyal to the brand and hoped that their longstanding Chicago location would be a good one. However, I found the hotel to be surprisingly mismatched and dated, particularly the guest rooms. Because it’s been updated in a piecemeal fashion, this hotel was missing a defined luxury identity that is present at most other Four Seasons locations. The only other luxury hotel I’ve tried in Chicago was the Langham, and I much preferred that property. Trip Planning: As I always do when booking a Four Seasons, I reserved through a Preferred Partner travel agent, which enabled me to get free perks (I highly recommend doing this). For no additional cost, my reservation included a room upgrade based on availability at check-in, a one-time $100 hotel credit, and an $80 breakfast credit which could be used in the hotel restaurant or for in-room dining. Pre-Arrival: Prior to arrival, I didn’t have much communication with the hotel, other than receiving a phone call from the reservations department about two weeks before my stay. I’ve never had this issue at any other Four Seasons, but there was some confusion over whether the name on my reservation and the same name that they were seeing in their general guest profile system were both me. It all seemed really obvious without needing to call me directly (and since I had booked through a Preferred Partner travel agent, it would probably have been more professional to call her), but the staff member was friendly, so I didn’t mind. I also told him that I would be arriving early, between 8:00 and 9:00 am, and he said they would try their best to have a room ready for me, which they did. Arrival: I arrived at the hotel just before 9:00 am on a Wednesday, which is a very quiet time for hotel arrivals. Despite the hotel not being busy when I was dropped off, I was surprised that with a couple staff members standing by the door, neither bothered to come over to assist or greet me. When I reached the door, the doorman (who was on a cell phone taking a call), just sort of gestured me in and said to go to the 7th floor for check-in. I’m not sure if the call was work-related or personal, but it came off as unprofessional and unusual. The welcome at the door definitely left a lot to be desired, and I didn’t find the staff there to be any better at other times during my stay when coming or going. Especially in a city hotel, the staff at the hotel entrance is key, since you have fewer staff touchpoints than in resort-style properties. If anything, the door should be over-staffed with friendly, proactive staff members. Although you enter the hotel on the ground level, and there is a small seating area down there, you immediately go up to the 7th floor for the main lobby and check-in. Both lobby areas are nicely renovated with a modern feel. The 7th floor lobby is particularly large, and is quite cavernous with lots of seating areas, which is great. From the arrival experience, I was impressed by the décor and mistakenly thought the entire hotel would follow a similar aesthetic. Check-in was pleasant, and Caner at the front desk was helpful and welcoming. He offered me water or coffee while I completed check-in and immediately confirmed the good news that I had been upgraded from a Lake View Room to a Lake View Executive Suite, and even better, that it was ready for a very early check-in. I realized later that he didn’t go over the inclusions in my room rate, such as the amount of the breakfast credit, but it was easy enough to confirm that later. Room: Rooms are on high floors of the building (30-46), and you take a separate set of elevators to get from the lobby to the rooms. This is slightly annoying when coming or going, since you have to go down to the 7th floor lobby and then transfer onto a separate set of elevators to get to the ground level. Luckily, I found the elevators to be pretty efficient. I had made a couple of room requests in advance of my stay, which were for a quiet room with no connecting door to other rooms. As requested, my room didn’t have a connecting door to another, which was great, but it was basically the first room past the elevators and shared a wall with the elevator bank, which made me nervous about noise. I could hear the dings of the elevators on occasion, but it wasn’t bad overall, and the room was largely very quiet. I thought the hotel could have done better with being attentive to the requests, but it was a no harm, no foul situation. I really appreciated the upgrade from a standard room to an Executive Suite, and the clear standout feature of the room was its view. The view of Lake Michigan was absolutely gorgeous, and just a perfect view of the water along with nearby buildings in the city, such as the iconic Hancock Center. The room also had nice window seats to take in the view. I also appreciated that the hotel delivered a note on behalf of my travel agent to welcome me to the hotel, along with a plate of chocolates and macarons. The Executive Suite provided a good amount of space, and was perfect for me, but it wasn’t particularly large for a suite in general. You entered into a living area with a pull-out sofa, armchair and dining table with two chairs, which is separated from the bedroom by frosted glass doors. Off of the bedroom was the bathroom, which was very small, with a single sink, tub, and separate shower. The shower was particularly tight, and I could barely move around in it, despite not being a large person. If the bathrooms are ever renovated, ditching the rather basic tub and moving to having a larger shower would be a major improvement. The room was appointed with all of the usual things you’d expect at a Four Seasons, including the great Four Seasons bed, Le Labo bath products, and nice robes. There was a sound machine on the nightstand and earplugs provided in case there was wind noise overnight (there wasn’t, but I like the thoughtful preparation just in case). However, the room also fell really flat by being very dated. I’m used to Four Seasons properties having really updated rooms with a feeling of modern luxury, and that simply wasn’t the case here. Especially since common areas have all been renovated, including the room hallways, walking into a very underwhelming room itself was a disappointment. The room was comfortable, but also totally mismatched and dated. The headboard, nightstands, mini-bar, and TV unit in the living room were all in an old blond orangey wood, while the bathroom vanity and two dressers in the bedroom were in a dark espresso-colored wood. Another dresser unit was in white. Hardware was finished in everything from chrome to brushed bronze. The bathroom had tan marble and a dated orange stone countertop. The carpet was busy and looked tired, with a lot of small stains. Simply nothing matched, and it all felt tired. The room gave much more of a generic chain hotel feel than I expected, which was disappointing, since room design and condition are normally Four Seasons strong points. The rooms here really need renovation. At check-out, I actually asked about this, and was told that higher level suites (starting at one-bedroom suites) have been renovated, but it didn’t sound like there are any immediate plans to renovate the executive suites and regular guest rooms, which desperately need it. Housekeeping could also have been better. While the room was clean upon arrival, I realized in the evening after getting back from the gym that the room looked like turndown might have occurred, but that it was abandoned halfway through. There was a carafe of water on the nightstand that hadn’t been there before, and one set of blinds was half shut, but none of the others. However, nothing else in a normal turndown looked completed, such as replacing bath towels or emptying trash, so I asked the hotel to confirm if turndown had been completed. They said it had been done, so I just mentioned that it wasn’t done well, and they sent someone back while I was at dinner. When I returned after that, it was much better, with the bathroom properly attended to, slippers by the bed, and even some of my clothes folded better than they had been, which was nice. Dining & Bars: The hotel’s restaurant, Adorn, is located off of the lobby on the 7th floor with a large attached wraparound bar and lounge, and features what I was told is a “modern Midwestern” menu of classic American dishes with some twists. I went to Adorn for dinner, and it was a really nice experience. The restaurant looks nice and modern, since it’s on the renovated lobby level. The staff there was all kind, and my server was very attentive. The tuna tartare was particularly great, and the cocktail and wine options by the glass were solid. Toward the end of my meal, the adjacent bar had gotten incredibly crowded and loud, since it appeared that some sort of event at the hotel had just ended. This was an abrupt change from the quiet and serene environment it had been through most of my meal. The staff was great about getting my check quickly along with my final drink that I was welcome to take back to my room to escape the cacophony. There aren’t any restaurants at the hotel beyond Adorn and the adjacent bar/lounge area. It would be nice to have additional choices, but the hotel’s great location is convenient for dining at many great places in Downtown Chicago. I also ordered breakfast from in-room dining, and it was a mixed bag. The food was delivered by a very friendly staff member and set-up really nicely in the window so I could eat with the lake view. However, the food quality wasn’t the best. I ordered eggs benedict, and while the eggs themselves were cooked well, the hollandaise sauce was too thick and came totally congealed and cold, while the Canadian bacon under the eggs was also just not the best and virtually flavorless. I ordered a cappuccino which also came with no foam on it (or maybe the foam evaporated en route)? The staff member commented on this and apologized, but it was still a bit annoying since a layer of foam is part of what makes a cappuccino a cappuccino and they were charging $9 for it. Other Amenities: The key hotel amenities include a spa, fitness center, and indoor pool on the 8th floor. I visited this area, and it was very nice with friendly staff members. Similar to the lobby level, it had been recently renovated. I understand that the pool was even completely re-done with a new larger hot tub installed in the past couple years. To access the gym or pool, you go through the spa locker rooms, so use of those amenities is available to all hotel guests. The locker room was well-equipped and nicely maintained with a sauna and steam room. The gym was sort of tucked away in an odd manner, accessed up a separate narrow staircase by the pool. However, it was a well-equipped space, with lots of equipment for any type of workout, along with chilled towels and both regular and fruit-infused water. It also has large windows with city views. I found everything I needed for my workout in the gym, but was a little disappointed that the one Concept2 rower that they had was in poor condition. The chain for the rower was having some sort of issue where it was getting caught, so it needs maintenance or replacement. I didn’t necessarily have specific plans to visit the pool, but I saw it when I was on the way to the gym and was surprised at how inviting it looked, so I spent some time there. The indoor pool is large and bright, with lots of seating areas, including chaise lounges, as well as other cushioned chairs and benches. In addition to the pool itself, there is a large separate hot tub. There were some pieces of fruit and fruit-infused water offered by the pool, but I also noticed there was a menu for poolside food and beverage options. This concept is really nice in a city hotel, as it makes the pool area feel more like a resort where you could spend some time and have service. However, when I visited, no staff members ever came around to actually offer poolside service. I was there during the last hour before the pool closed at 8:00 pm, but it still would have been nice if someone came around at some point during that time (even if it was just to basically offer a last call on poolside drinks). I didn’t need anything, but it was bit unclear if the poolside service is really proactively offered, or if I would have had to go out of my way to find someone and place an order. Regardless, the pool was a surprisingly pleasant and relaxing place to spend some time. It was also interesting to learn that this hotel pool was actually featured in the movie Home Alone 2 (purporting to be at the Plaza Hotel in New York City in the movie). It’s changed a bit since, as it used to have more of an ornate European style. I enjoyed my time using the gym, indoor pool, and spa facilities, which was an unexpected highlight of my stay. I expected to go to the gym, but I didn’t expect that I’d want to go back to my room to grab a bathing suit and return to relax in the pool and hot tub during a business trip, which was nice. At check-in, I was reminded that the hotel has a house car to travel within a two-mile radius, available on a first-come, first-served basis. However, it was a clunky experience trying to use the house car, and it seems to be of limited utility. Very shortly after check-in, I called to see if the car might be available to take me to my office in the Loop. The front desk said they’d check with the staff downstairs to see if it was available, before calling me back a minute later to say that they needed to know where my destination was. I then waited several more minutes for another call specifying that the car wasn’t available. I had wasted at least 10 minutes going back and forth and waiting to hear if the car was available (if I had just gotten an Uber, I could have been at my destination in that time). I did appreciate that Caner at the front desk was very apologetic about the whole thing, and again apologized profusely as I walked by the front desk after that to leave. At check-out the next day, there was clearly a note about it somewhere, because that staff member again apologized for the house car issues. It’s totally possible the car just wasn’t available, but I couldn’t help but feel like there was more to the story, since a first-come, first-served car not being available normally wouldn’t require so much apologizing. While my destination was well within the two-mile radius for house car drop-offs, the fact that they specifically wanted to know my destination before giving an answer about availability, and then took a long time to get back to me before saying no, made it feel like it was being denied for some other reason, such as lack of staff to drive me. I could be totally wrong on this, but the whole thing felt odd. Later in the day, when I was leaving to come back to the hotel, I contacted the hotel and asked if the house car would be able to pick me up and bring me back. I was also flexible to wait for a time when it would be available. However, I was again denied, on the basis that the house car only does departures from the hotel, not pick-ups to come back. This didn’t make much sense to me, since there’s no practical difference between needing it to leave the hotel or needing it for a pickup to come back. Either way, the staff are driving one-way with the guest in the vehicle and one way without the guest. I’ve been to other hotels that would provide house car service in either direction, so the limitations here were a bit frustrating and I never actually got to try the house car. Location: The Four Seasons does have a prime location in Downtown Chicago, right in the heart of the Magnificent Mile off of North Michigan Avenue. It’s an upscale area that’s a great jumping off point for visiting the city. The hotel is also in the same building as the 900 North Michigan Shops, which I didn’t visit, but is a large luxury mall. The hotel elevators stop on a floor that connects into the mall. The hotel is about 4 blocks from the CTA Red Line train, which isn’t all that far, but also isn’t right around the corner. One thing I did prefer about the Langham as an alternative hotel (although the general neighborhood around the Four Seasons is nicer), is that it’s close to the Blue Line train that goes directly to O’Hare. Traffic getting into the city from the airport can be really awful, so I generally prefer taking the Blue Line in over an Uber. However, the train isn’t really practical to get to the Four Seasons, since you’d have to do the Blue Line into the city, and then transfer to the Red Line, only to still have to walk 4 blocks to the hotel after that. Especially with luggage in tow, it’s not worth all the hassle. Departure Experience: Nothing was particularly noteworthy about my departure experience, which was a good thing, since it went smoothly. I stopped at the front desk to get a final copy of my bill, fully expecting there to be mistakes, particularly with applying the credits that were included in my room rate, which has been an ongoing issue at other Four Seasons hotels I’ve visited recently. However, everything was applied perfectly from the start here, which I really appreciated. When I went outside to get an Uber back to the airport, the staff at the entrance were just as unhelpful as when I arrived. One of the doormen asked if I was waiting for an Uber that was pulling up, and when I said that I was, I kind of assumed he’d offer to help with my luggage or simply wish me a pleasant trip home. Instead, he oddly just walked away without doing either, which feels like a failure at the basics of luxury hotel service. The entrance staff had chances to be helpful upon both my arrival and departure, and failed at both. Service: Service was a strong point of the Four Seasons Chicago. Other than the staff at the entrance, which I’ve mentioned, everyone else was great. I don’t think I met a single other staff member who wasn’t friendly and professional. Staff members always said hello when passing by, and I noticed that whenever a staff member had occasion to know who I was, they were great about addressing me by name (often more than is even needed), which helps make things feel personalized. One minor situation in which I found service to be slightly lacking was when calling on the room phone. I usually use the great Four Seasons app for most communication, but in some cases I found it easier to call, such as to request the house car or place my breakfast order. However, both times (on two separate days), the phone just rang and rang for quite a while when I called. One time, I eventually just got a busy signal and had to keep trying for an answer. The other time, after lots of ringing, the call was re-routed to the hotel operator, who then transferred me to the department that I thought I was calling the whole time. I’m not sure if these encounters were just a weird phone glitch, or indicative of a lack of staffing to answer the phones. Overall: Overall, the Four Seasons Chicago does have a lot going for it, with a great location, great views, and some really nice common facilities that have been updated in recent years. However, the very dated rooms are a huge negative. Especially in a city like Chicago, where there is a lot of choice among luxury hotels, I’d expect everything at this property to be pristine and updated, but the renovation here feels unfinished and half-hearted. I came to the Four Seasons expecting something at least equivalent to my past stay at the Langham, so it was disappointing to feel like this hotel was actually a step down.

The Four Seasons Chicago provided a phenomenal stay from start to finish. Every detail was accounted for ahead of time to meet guest needs, and every member of the staff was pleasant and friendly, from the front desk to the concierge to the spa staff. The bedding was exquisitely comfortable. We had a magnificent view of the lake, and the staff made sure to make my birthday incredibly special. I used the pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room and enjoyed them all. The hotel was clean, quiet, and relaxing. It is a true refuge in a large city such as Chicago.
